Luis Rubiales to stand trial over World Cup kiss

The former head of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, is facing trial for kissing Women’s World Cup player Jenni Hermoso without her consent. This kiss, during last year’s World Cup match against England, received widespread attention and led to Rubiales’ resignation.

He denies any wrongdoing and claims the kiss was consensual. However, a judge has charged him with sexual assault and coercion.

The incident happened during a historic moment for Spain’s women’s team, causing a national debate on sexism. Rubiales, along with other officials, is accused of pressuring Hermoso to say the kiss was consensual. If convicted, they could face jail time.

The trial will take place in Madrid, but the date is yet to be confirmed. Rubiales has been asked to pay bail within 24 hours to cover any potential financial damages.

Spain’s former soccer chief, Luis Rubiales, may stand trial for a nonconsensual kiss at the Women’s World Cup, a Spanish judge said Thursday. Rubiales, the former Spanish soccer federation president, was banned in October from national and international soccer activities for three years after the organization found he violated an article of FIFA’s disciplinary code. #news #spain #fifa
