The sun is blaring across the capital this morning, as the UK is set for high temperatures and clear skies this week.

So grab yourself a coffee and let’s have a look at the headlines this Monday morning.

11 dead in Vancouver car attack

Much of the coverage online is of course regarding the Vancouver car attack in Canada over the weekend.

So far, at least 11 people have died, including a 5-year-old child, and many have been left injured. Police have ruled out terrorism – a 30-year-old male suspect has been arrested.

The horror attack happened just one day before Monday’s Canadian election. Today’s Canadians will head to the polls after Mark Carney called a snap election, where he has made it clear – Donald Trump is the country’s biggest threat. Canadians today will decide who is best to deal with the US president.

Trump is back in the news (of course) with his most recent comments on a potential Ukraine peace deal, in which he said Zelenskyy has accepted he will have to give up Crimea (something the Ukrainian president has rejected).

    UK heatwave this week

The UK is set for the warmest April in seven years, as the week ahead will be hot hot hot! The temperature in southern England could hit 27C later this week, and most areas across the UK will experience warmth and sunshine.

The lack of rain will likely raise concerns about potential wildfires.

    Liverpool win the EPL title

And perhaps the biggest story in England – and one of the biggest around the world, is news that Liverpool have won the Premier League title – with three games left of the season.

It’s their first title under new manager Arne Slot, who replaced Liverpool legend Jurgeon Klopp last season.

At least 11 dead in Vancouver car attack

    • The Guardian reports that prosecutors have suggested more charges against the suspect Kai-Ji Adam Lo are possible. The paper notes that cops have already ruled out terrorism saying Lo had a history of mental health issues.
    • CNN reports that the suspect has been charged with murder after the car ramming killed at least 11 people – and police say victims were aged between five and 65.
    • The Times of India reports that the suspect apologised to the crowd after being detained by some festival-goers after his car ramming attack. In a now-viral video, the suspect can be heard saying “Sorry.”
    • ABC says that more than 12 hours after the attack, police still have no motive – although they have ruled out terrorism. “There were no known threats to the event or to the Filipino community,” Mr Rai said.
    • The Independent reports King Charles has said he was “profoundly saddened” after learning of the attack in Vancouver. Charles, who is the King of Canada, said: “Both my wife and I were profoundly saddened to learn of the dreadful attack and utterly tragic loss of life in Vancouver, which took place as the Filipino community came together to mark the celebration of one of their most special festivals.”

Hottest April in seven years for UK

    • LBC reports forecasters are predicting that conditions will become increasingly warm from Monday – but whether any parts of the country will actually see an official heatwave remains to be seen.
    • The Times says the Met Office forecasts that warm air from Europe will bring near-heatwave conditions by Wednesday and Thursday.
    • The Daily Mirror says Brits need to get ready for another heatwave and say goodbye to dreary weather as a “scorcher heads its way down south” with the hottest day of the year so far forecast.

    Liverpool win the Premier League

    • The Guardian reports Liverpool have won a record-equalling 20th league title in a stunning debut season for Arne Slot after beating Spurs 5-1 at Anfield.  The paper goes on to say, Slot “who took on the seemingly unenviable task of succeeding Jürgen Klopp last summer, becomes the first man in Liverpool’s illustrious history to win the championship in his debut season with the club.
    • The Sun says emotional scenes broke out at the end of Sunday’s match with Spurs – noting Liverpool fans couldn’t celebrate their last EPL title in public due to Covid restrictions.
    • BBC Sport looks ahead saying despite the victory – confirmed with still 3 matches of the season to play – Slot and his team need to start looking ahead at transfers.
    • The Sun reports on how much Liverpool will receive for finishing top of the EPL – and what other financial benefits are in store for the club.
    • Al Jazeera says Liverpool have now equally Man Utd’s 20 English top-flight titles by beating Spurs at Anfield to win the EL title.
