Trending – Lily Allen branded anti-working class

Lily Allen’s reaction to England losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final is one of today’s most interesting online trending stories in the UK. 

Allen uploaded an AI-generated image of a group of middle-aged, bald men sitting in the rain, crying, wearing Union Jack underpants. They had Union Jack flags wrapped around them and pints of beer in their hands, while a sea of Union Jack umbrellas could be seen in the background. 

The bizarre post – and the use of the wrong flag – has seen Lilly Allen being mocked again. 

Is Lily Allen an anti-working class? 

Football is a deeply working-class sport its history and culture reflect that. It’s also full of stereotypes about what working-class England looks like – and Lily Allen, a woman born into wealth and privilege, seemingly mocking working-class culture has not gone down well.

Replying, X user Lara_Flyingminx wrote: ‘Why do you despise the working class?’

When trevtheshed19 responded to the above tweet, asking: ‘Why do you see a large, bald, white male and assume working class?’, they replied: ‘The image is a montage of cliches about the angry, white, middle aged, working class, beer drinking, overweight football supporter. Traditionally working class.’

In a lengthy response, SecEnlightUK began: ‘Not quite sure what your point is here.

‘Firstly as you’re using the Union flag and not the cross of St George I assume you’re stereotyping the Scottish and Welsh as well? Secondly, football is one of the few things nowadays that unites us. It transcends class, race and politics.’
