Liam Hemsworth has been confirmed as Henry Cavill’s replacement in season 4 of The Witcher.

The series will return for a fourth instalment but Superman star Henry will not, revealing that he will be ‘laying down my medallion and my swords’ after three seasons as Geralt of Rivia.

Announcing to fans of the Netflix drama that his journey as the monster hunter has come to an end, Henry, 39, praised the ‘fantastic’ Liam, 32, and said he will be ‘fascinating’ in the role.

‘Some news to share from The Continent…’, he began. ‘My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.’

He continued on Instagram: ‘In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.’

Addressing the Australian star directly, Henry concluded: ‘Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.’

Releasing his own statement, Liam shared that he is a longtime fan of The Witcher, and is ‘over the moon’ to have bagged the coveted role.

‘Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,’ Liam penned.

Continuing the bromance, he wrote: ‘Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character.

Fans are divided over what to make of Liam’s casting (Picture: Getty)

‘I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.’

Many fans are totally here for the new casting, and can’t wait to see Liam get to grips with his new character.

However, there’s a divide, as others claimed the role was ‘made’ for Henry, expressing how much they’re going to miss him and hoping that the announcement was a ‘joke.’

‘Such a shame! Geralt was practically made for you and you made it your own,’ one fan commented on Henry’s post.’

😭😭I’m sure Liam will bring something to Geralt, but this role was meant for you…. You brought so much for the show in general….  Geralt will never be the same without you…. We will miss you so much,’ wrote another.

But, plenty of people are open to change, with a fan writing: ‘I feel sad that you didn’t finish the show as Geralt but good luck to Mr. Hemsworth.’

Fans have a while to wait until Liam makes his debut, though, as season 3 is yet to land.

The Witcher: Blood Origin —  a spin-off that explores the creation of the first prototype Witcher — premieres on December 25, and The Witcher Season 3 will follow shortly after in summer 2023.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Witcher are streaming now on Netflix.
