Lebanon’s Hariri steps down, plunging country into deeper crisis

Lebanon’s PM-designate Saad Hariri has stepped down after nine months in the job, citing “key differences” with the president, leaving the cash-strapped country leaderless and now plunging into further chaos. 

Lebanon is suffering from unprecedented economic collapse – one of the worst in a century and a half according to the World Bank. The crisis has been further fuelled by the lack of government for nearly a year. 

On Wednesday, Mr Haririr presented a 24-person cabinet to President Michel Aoun sparking hopes a government could be formed – which would allow millions of dollars of much needed international aid. 

But after a 20-minute meeting with Mr Aoun on Thursday, he said “It is clear that we will not be able to agree with the president”.

Hariri resigned from his post in October 2019 in response to nationwide protests which demanded major reforms and condemned the political class. 

A year later he was back in the post amid a crippling economic crisis and months after the massive Beirut blast that compounded the country’s woes.
