Champions League: Late Matip header gives Liverpool the win over Ajax
Joel Matip’s late goal saw Liverpool beat Ajax at Anfield to claim their first Champions League win of the season.
Jurgen Klopp had told his team they needed to react to the “horror show” of the 4-1 defeat at Napoli in their group opener.
Liverpool played a decent game, creating plenty of chances and went ahead when Salah swept home Diogo Jota’s pass.
Ajax’s Mohammed Kudis’ searing shot went in off the underside of the bar to level the score before Matip headed home the winner in the 89th minute.
Just before Matip’s goal, Daley Blind missed a great chance to put Ajax ahead.
Liverpool’s persistence paid off and whilst they are still nowhere near playing at their best, this game still secured the victory that has made their Champions League Group A look more positive for Klopp’s side.
