Las Vegas GP: Loose maintenance cover causes multiple red flags in practice

Loose Maintenance Cover Causes Multiple Red Flags in Las Vegas GP Practice

The second practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix was marred by safety concerns as officials red-flagged the event twice due to a loose maintenance cover near Turn 17. This incident mirrors a demoralising episode from the inaugural race two years prior, raising alarms about the safety of the circuit.

    First Red Flag Signals Trouble

The first stoppage occurred when a trackside marshal alerted race officials about the unstable maintenance cover. This precautionary measure prompted race control to assess the area. Fifteen minutes later, the FIA reassured the teams that conditions were safe enough to resume the session. However, it wasn’t long before the session faced another interruption.

    Second Stoppage Raises Further Concerns

As teams approached the final stages of the practice session, a second red flag was waved amidst renewed concerns regarding the loose cover. Despite earlier reassurances, reported movement of the manhole cover as cars sped over it ultimately led to the session’s termination under red flag conditions.

    FIA’s Response and Ongoing Inspections

In the wake of the second stoppage, the FIA confirmed that race control personnel remained on-site to monitor the situation. Their findings indicated that the cover’s movement posed a significant risk, triggering a comprehensive inspection of the area to ensure safety before resuming track activities.

Loose Covers: A Common Danger at Street Circuits

Loose maintenance covers are not an uncommon issue at street races, where the immense forces generated by Formula 1 cars can cause such hazards. The fact that these incidents persist highlights the need for stringent checks and maintenance protocols to avoid compromising driver safety.

    Impact on the Weekend’s Schedule

While the second practice session concluded prematurely, it did not derail the overall schedule for the weekend. The F1 Academy managed to proceed with its qualifying session shortly after the practice’s end, incurring only a minimal delay. This slight disruption serves as a reminder for organisers to derive lessons from past incidents to ensure a safer racing environment moving forward.

As the Las Vegas Grand Prix approaches, stakeholders will be keenly watching how these safety concerns are addressed, underscoring the paramount importance of stringent safety measures in the fast-paced world of Formula 1 racing.
