Daily Express – Labour’s tax mistruths betray British publicÂ
The Daily Express reports Labour tax hikes based on “mistruths” about the nation’s finances will be an “ultimate betrayal” of the British public, former chancellor Jeremy Hunt has warned.
Elsewhere, there is a report on potential industrial action by GPs that could bring the NHS to a ‘standstill’ according to the paper. An image of Adam Peaty – who won silver for Team GB at the Olympics also makes the front splash.Â
Tax hikes based on mistruths would be the ultimate betrayal of the British public
Labour’s latest trick is to try to fabricate their own truth – but it won’t work. The Office for Budget Responsibility was established by the Conservative Government in 2010.
It was founded to ensure that there was full transparency of the public finances so that anyone from governments to political parties and even the public could know full well what was available, and what government policy costs.
It came after the last Labour government left the country a financial mess which took years to recover from. In 2010 inflation was running at 3.4%, unemployment had reached 8% the deficit was more than double today’s levels, with forecasting predicting a rise to 11.8%
Adam Peaty heartache as Olympic ace misses gold in Paris but secures silver
Adam Peaty heartbreakingly missed out on Olympic gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke final, taking a joint-silver medal. The Team GB star missed out by 0.02 seconds to surprise winner Nicolo Martinenghi from Italy.
Peaty was swimming for three consecutive gold medals in the Olympic 100m breaststroke. He came first at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021.
The 29-year-old’s remarkable journey to get to this point is well documented, and at one point it seemed he may cap it in the most perfect way. He led the race heading into the final quarter with Martinenghi and Nic Fink bearing down on him.
But it was the impressive Martinenghi who reached the end of the pool the quickest. The 24-year-old finished in 59.03 seconds. Peaty touched the wall at 59.05 – with Fink finishing in exactly the same time.
