King Charles ‘looking grumpy’ ahead of coronation ceremony
King Charles is in “danger of disappearing completely” as he’s “struggling to connect” with the British public, one royal author claims.
The withering assessment comes after the King’s historic coronation in May.
In an all too rare show of unity, the nation came together to celebrate Charles’ crowning at Westminster Abbey – a ceremony steeped in ancient ritual and brimming with bling at a time when the monarchy is striving to remain relevant in a fractured modern Britain.
That brief spell of optimism has now been replaced with a sense of indifference about the King’s reign, or at least it has in the eyes of royal author Clive Irving.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Express US, the author of The Last Queen and royal columnist at The Daily Beast painted an altogether bleak picture of the current state of affairs.

Irving explained: “When Charles appears, he doesn’t connect. I felt that very strongly at the time of the coronation that he looked almost morose throughout the whole ceremony.
“It’s almost as though he’s in danger of disappearing completely from the public consciousness.”
In the royal author’s opinion, Charles has failed to step out of the large shadow cast by his late mother.

Indeed, Charles had exceptionally big boots to fill following the death of his mother in September of last year.
Queen Elizabeth II endeared herself to the nation throughout her 70 years of public duties, sprinkling a bit of royal stardust on communities across Britain.
“The most glaring thing at the moment is that after a year it’s become stunningly clear how brilliant the Queen was at the job and how poor he is at the job,” Irving went on.
“She [the Queen] connected through the TV screen or with people in person. When Charles appears, he doesn’t connect.”

In fact, Her Late Majesty’s unique ability to engage with the public set the bar impossibly high for Charles, reckons Tom Bower, author of Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Express US, he shared many of Irving’s sentiments.
He said: “Charles’s popularity is clearly nothing like his mother’s. But the monarchy is still popular.”
Does the public agree?
The latest polling suggests the public is not so down on Charles. The King currently commands the support of a majority of Britons – with one in seven saying he is doing better than hoped, a recent poll revealed.
The Ipsos survey for The Standard found 71 percent of adults say he is doing as expected, 14 percent better than expected, five percent worse, with ten percent “don’t know”.
