King Charles has had a lot to grapple with during his 14 months on the throne, but his family troubles is the one that is proving to be the biggest headache.
Over the last few weeks he’s found himself in somewhat of a briefing war with his youngest son Prince Harry.
Discrepancies over the King’s 75th birthday party dominated headlines, while the Duke of Sussex appears determined to push a reconciliation line by leaking details of private conversations between him and his father.
The latest turn of events saw “friends of the Sussexes” tell the Sunday Times that they would snap up an invite to join the Royal Family at Sandringham this Christmas – though one has not yet been extended to their Californian abode.
Such a statement now leaves Charles in a tricky situation – does he invite them and risk a family feud breaking out over Christmas dinner?
Insiders have suggested that Prince William would refuse to attend if Harry and Meghan were invited – as the multitude of attacks he levelled in his memoir and Netflix docu-series still cuts deep.
The heir to the throne is not yet ready to forgive and forget – and it’s not clear if he will ever be prepared to put the past behind him as as far as he’s concerned, Harry crossed a line no royal should ever cross.
Queen Camilla is also understood to be uneasy about a reconciliation, especially one so soon, as she was described as the “wicked stepmother” in Spare and was not portrayed favourably.
What then does Charles do? Does he extend an invite and risk antagonising his loyal family members who have barely ever put a step wrong – or risk the wrath of his youngest son, which could lead to more bombshells and negative headlines?

There is no scenario at the moment which leaves all parties happy, which means the King will be forced to decide who is his priority – the heir to the throne, or as Harry so plainly put it, the spare?
William will undoubtedly be the one who triumphs, as afterall a Christmas without him also means Kate and their three children will also miss out on the royal festivities.
What is clear is that a royal reunion this Christmas would be too soon, as not even 12 months have passed since Harry’s 400-page book hit the shelves.
Charles is better off delaying a face-to-face reunion until 2024 – or longer – if he doesn’t want the rest of his family to feel betrayed.
