Kate Forbes speaks out amidst speculation about SNP leadership race
Kate Forbes, the former finance secretary of Scotland, has hinted at a potential run for the leadership of the Scottish National Party (SNP). In an interview with Sky News, Forbes expressed her support for a full-blown leadership contest, emphasising the importance of party unity and the need for the membership to rally behind the next leader.
While Forbes acknowledged the groundswell of support she has within the party, she also emphasised the need to consider what is best for the party, the country, and her family. She highlighted the importance of electing a leader who can unite the party and lead them into the next election, ensuring they have the trust of the people.
Forbes also spoke highly of her potential challenger, John Swinney, describing him as a “much-loved and well-respected” figure in the SNP. Swinney, who previously served as deputy first minister, has confirmed that he is considering a run for the leadership position.
As First Minister @HumzaYousaf cared passionately about Scotland. Few of us will forget his statesmanship and compassion on Gaza. He is an honourable man, who displayed dignity and humility today. I wish him and Nadia well with their impending new arrival in the summer.
