Trent Alexander-Arnold has long been touted as a Liverpool midfielder of the future, and Jamie Carragher feels now may be the time for Jurgen Klopp to change the full-back’s position.
Alexander-Arnold has been fantastic for the Reds at right-back under Klopp, proving to be a serious threat going forward with his superb crossing, passing and even shooting from free-kicks.
However, this has been a frustrating season for Liverpool as they struggle to find their best form, with Alexander-Arnold also not at the peak of his powers.
Klopp’s midfield has come in for plenty of criticism and Carragher reckons he could have the answer to that problem already in his team.
The former Reds star thinks Alexander-Arnold has always been a midfielder but has just found himself at full-back and will inevitably end up back in the middle of the park.
Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: ‘Watching Trent during Liverpool’s run to Premier League and Champions League glory, he looked exactly what he is. A creative midfielder who has found a place at right-back under a manager who designs a team to spend more time in the attacking third than defending its own box. When the starting XI and system purrs, so does Alexander-Arnold.
‘In terms of his passing range, Alexander-Arnold is as good as anyone in Europe and the closest Liverpool have to Kevin De Bruyne or Steven Gerrard.
‘Given how desperate Liverpool are for a creative midfielder, would turning him into a No 8 so he can fill those areas to whip those extraordinary passes into the penalty area be such a radical move? With Stefan Bajcetic out for the season, would Klopp even consider it as an immediate measure?
‘I am convinced Alexander-Arnold will return to midfield eventually, whether it is in his late twenties or early thirties. It does not matter how many medals a player has won, the best will always be looking at ways to get better.’
