Wayne Rooney is in a ‘different stratosphere’ to Harry Kane, says Joey Barton (Picture: Getty)
Joey Barton has argued that Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is ‘levels and levels above’ Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
Spurs star Kane, who has once again been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford, recently surpassed Rooney as England’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Kane is currently one place below Rooney in the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts but will soon overtake him.
Rooney scored a total of 208 Premier League goals and is second on the all-time list, behind Alan Shearer’s 260, while Kane is currently third with 204.
Kane has spent his entire career at Tottenham but with the club unable to lift a major trophy since 2008, and with the England captain out of contract in the summer of 2024, many have suggested that he may finally leave this summer.
United have a long-term interest in Kane and believe they have a good chance of bringing him in, especially if Spurs miss out on a Champions League spot.
Barton, though, has been comparing Kane to Rooney and feels the latter is ‘in a completely different stratosphere’.
Barton posted on Twitter on Monday: ‘People comparing Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane?
‘WR (Wayne Rooney) in a completely different stratosphere. Levels and levels and levels above.
‘Respect what Harry Kane has done but let’s settle down on the goal record. Michael Owen. Alan Shearer. Gary Lineker. All light years ahead as marksmen.

‘Then Rooney just a well better player. The last world class Englishman. (Jude) Bellingham has a chance to be WC (world class) of [the] current mob.’
Rooney called time on his career in 2021 having won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Europa League and three League Cups.
He has since entered into management and is currently in charge of Major League Soccer side DC United in the United States.
