Macy Gray storming off The Masked Singer stage while dressed as a toad in a hole was pretty amusing for viewers, but perhaps one person found it even funnier – Joel Dommett.
The host was right there on the stage when Macy, 57, walked away after being named as the third celebrity to leave the competition after Kate Garraway and Dame Prue Leith.
Justifying voting her to be unmasked, Jonathan Ross said the judges were pretty ‘certain’ they knew who it was and were simply ‘desperate’ to see if they were right.
The reasoning wasn’t enough for Macy, who left the crew bewildered when she marched right off stage.
When Macy did return and unmask herself, she was seemingly unhappy with the decision, giving short responses to the panel Jonathan, Maya Jama, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan who tried to compliment the star.
Now, Joel has revealed how he truly felt watching all the action unfold on the Saturday night Entertainment show.
Speaking to Paddy McGuinness on BBC Radio 2, he hailed the scenes as some of the most humorous of his entire life. He spent many weeks in an Australian jungle with Gogglebox legend Scarlett Moffatt for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2016 so that’s high praise.
Firstly, Joel, 39, highlighted that being a good singer doesn’t necessarily buy you extra time in the contest.
‘This is why The Masked Singer is so good, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or if you’re not, the show doesn’t sit in either camp,’ he explained.
He continued: ‘The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognisable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are.
‘If you go home early though it is a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.’
The comedian said that although he has lots of admiration for Macy, he doesn’t think she should have gotten angry while wearing such a ludicrous costume.
‘You can’t be vexed when you’re dressed as a toad. In my professional career – I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice – but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,’ he summarised.
Macy didn’t hang around
Joel added that what made the situation even funnier was that he was wearing hot pants during the moment, which was the result of a joke throughout the episode which saw his shorts get shorter after each advert break.
During the episode, Macy was asked whether she’d ‘had fun on the show’, she simply replied with: ‘Yeah.’ Joel himself shared a clip of the moment on Instagram with the caption, ‘Lol’.
When she was quizzed on having a song in the Shrek movie and being part of a Calvin Klein jeans campaign, she didn’t much feel like expanding.
Macy gave short answers
Once the main episode was over, Macy still didn’t feel like talking and avoided chatting with Harriet Rose for the spin-off show, After Mask.
In a short clip featured in the show, Harriet said it wasn’t looking likely they’d be able to chat as Macy walked behind her and away from cameras. At least it shows how passionate she is about her work, which is undoubtedly part of the reason she’s achieved such high levels of success.
The Masked Singer 2024 actually wasn’t Macy’s first rodeo, as the soul singer has taken part before. In 2021, Macy competed in the Australian version as Atlantis and reportedly ‘refused to leave’ after being voted out, and in 2023, she appeared as the wild card contestant Sea Queen in the US version.
Macy’s beautful and distinctive raspy voice has led to five Grammy Award nominations, one of which she has won. She is most known for her song I Try, from her multi-platinum album On How Life Is.
