Joe Root set to play for Yorkshire in County Championship

Joe Root set to play for Yorkshire in County Championship

Yorkshire coach, Andrew Gale, has revealed to BBC Radio Leeds that England captain Joe Root will play in, at least, their first two County Championship games.

Yorkshire have 7 County Championship matches before England’s next test match, which is against New Zealand on the 2nd June.

“It will be great to have Joe around”

England captain Joe Root set to return to Yorkshire for County Championship matches
Joe Root hasn’t played for Yorkshire in the County Championship for almost 2 years.

Aware of this, Gale stated that he would be “mindful of his workload” as well as adding that Root most likely won’t be playing in each of the 7 games, but “definitely” will play in the first 2.

Those first 2 County Championship games for Yorkshire are at home against Glamorgan on April 8th, then away to Kent a week later.

There’s no doubt that adding England captain Root would be hugely beneficial to Yorkshire, especially if he recreates his outstanding 5-8 figures with the ball like he did against India earlier this year.

Furthermore, Gale believes the addition of Root would not only be great for his ability on the field, but also for squad morale.

Gale said how “having him around the dressing room” would be “great” as well as saying “he’s a great bloke, he’ll be a real positive influence on us.”

Hopefully for Yorkshire, Root can return to the County Championship with a bang and provide an instant impact for Gale’s side, despite not having played County Championship cricket for nearly two years – his last appearance coming against Hampshire in April 2019.
