Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are unable to perform on the Dancing On Ice final for the first time in the show’s history.

The skating stars – who serve on the show’s judging panel alongside dancers Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse – won’t be taking to the ice as usual after Jayne ruptured a bicep tendon during rehearsals for the performance and hasn’t yet recovered sufficiently to be able to even put her skates on again.

She said: ‘I don’t think I have ever had an injury that’s stopped me doing what we were meant to be doing before.

‘We were three days from recording this routine, we had been working on it for weeks and weeks, we were more than ready to perform it.’

The 65-year-old added to the Mirror: ‘It’s like something being snatched away from you in the last second.’

The pair’s new routine would have been skated to Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand and they hope fans will get to see it eventually.

Jayne added: ‘We are hopeful it will see the light of day next season.’

Christopher said: ‘It’s not the end of us yet!’

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of their famous Bolero routine, which led to them winning Olympic gold in Sarajevo 1984, and fans could get to see them perform the routine again – for the last time.

Christopher said: ‘You never know, there might be some version of it. We will sit down and talk with ITV, 40 years on is a milestone, we would be silly to miss that.

‘It may be the last time!’

Jayne added to the publication that her injury was due to a ‘dramatic’ fall.

She said: ‘I had kind of tweaked my arm the day before it happened and just felt a bit sore, you get these odd pulls and strains and work through them.

‘We were doing a lift that was part of our routine, and I said to Chris “Maybe we won’t do this today, this might pull on the tendon,” and he said OK, and then I said “No, it’ll be fine, let’s just do it” – and I felt it ping, it pinged like an elastic band and it was extremely painful.’

Her skating partner added: ‘Jayne came out of the lift in an awkward fashion, and I couldn’t help her, so we ended up crashing down into the edge of the ice rink, it was quite a dramatic exit. As you get older, falls hurt more, that’s for sure.’

Jayne had previously explained her injury which happened during a lift and led to a fall.

When asked about the injury by host Phillip Schofield, the 65-year-old reassured viewers that she was ‘fine’ – but there was no quick fix, sadly, and an operation was required.

‘Talking of things going wrong on the ice, I’ve ruptured my bicep tendon so I’m going to need surgery,’ she explained.

‘But I’m fine and will be back on the ice soon,’ the ex-Olympian added.

The final will see The Vivienne, Joey Essex and Nile Wilson, after Mollie Gallagher and Siva Kaneswaran missed out on a spot.

Dancing on Ice: The Final airs Sunday at 6:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
