Japan GP: Tsunoda asked to get as close to Verstappen as possible

Tsunoda Eyeing Close Collaboration with Verstappen at Japan GP

In an exciting development ahead of the Japan Grand Prix, newly appointed Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda has been tasked by team principal Christian Horner to closely follow reigning champion Max Verstappen during the race. Tsunoda, who has stepped into Liam Lawson’s vacant seat after the young Kiwi was demoted, expressed his eagerness to contribute positively to the team’s performance.

    Tsunoda’s Transition to Red Bull

A New Era for the Japanese Driver

Yuki Tsunoda’s promotion to Red Bull marks a significant milestone in his Formula 1 career. He has been part of the junior team since 2021 and now finds himself in a position that many drivers aspire to. Upon taking over Lawson’s spot, which was vacated due to a lack of points, Tsunoda is focused on injecting fresh hope into Red Bull’s championship ambitions.

    Emphasis on Performance

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Tsunoda indicated the importance of his role in supporting Verstappen. “In the end, Red Bull Racing are focused on Max scoring a drivers’ championship,” Tsunoda noted, acknowledging Verstappen’s formidable talent. This clear alignment with the team’s goals underscores Tsunoda’s understanding of his priority to assist Verstappen while establishing himself on the track.

    Strategy and Team Dynamics

    Close Proximity to Verstappen

Horner’s directive for Tsunoda to “be as close to Max as possible” reflects the team’s strategy to leverage Tsunoda’s abilities in crucial race situations. Tsunoda explained that there may be race circumstances where he could aid in strategical calls, hinting at a shared responsibility within the team.

    Easing Competitive Tension

While many might assume inter-team rivalry, Tsunoda reassured that he would not shy away from contesting positions with Verstappen when the opportunity arises. “He [Horner] promised me in some situations that if I’m able to be in front of Max, that he wouldn’t necessarily ask me to swap positions,” Tsunoda disclosed, suggesting a collaborative approach rather than a purely hierarchical one.

    Home Advantage at Suzuka

    A Special Weekend for Tsunoda

The Japan Grand Prix is particularly poignant for Tsunoda, who regards his debut with Red Bull at home as “fate.” His connection to the Suzuka circuit, a revered track for Japanese fans and motorsport enthusiasts, adds an emotional layer to his performance expectations this weekend.

    Building Rapport with Verstappen

Despite not having interacted with Verstappen since his promotion, Tsunoda conveyed confidence in fostering a positive relationship. He acknowledged the contrast between Verstappen’s on-track persona and his off-track behavior, but is undeterred, stating, “I know what I want to do and probably how he drives and how he thinks.”

    Conclusion: A Bright Future Ahead

As the F1 circus arrives in Japan, all eyes will be on Yuki Tsunoda and how he adapts to his new role at Red Bull. His ability to balance competitiveness with collaboration alongside Verstappen could prove pivotal in Red Bull’s quest for championship glory this season. With the weight of home expectations and the thrill of a new opportunity, Tsunoda is ready to make his mark in front of his home crowd.
