Jamie Carragher says Bournemouth star was a ‘lucky boy’ not to be sent off against Liverpool

Jamie Carragher does not believe Justin Kluivert should have been sent off during Bournemouth vs Liverpool, but admits he was ‘lucky’ to avoid a red card.

The incident in question occurred in the 35th minute of Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Vitality.

While stretching for the ball, Bournemouth forward Kluivert went studs up into Luis Diaz’s ankle, in an accidental yet nasty-looking foul.

Referee Andy Madley waved play on before the ball was kicked out of play to allow the Liverpool winger to be seen to by the medical team before he was able to continue.

VAR looked at the incident but decided against punishing Kluivert, much to the annoyance of Jurgen Klopp.

Carragher ultimately agreed with the officials call, though noted that it was inconsistent with other similar incidents from earlier in the season, including one involving Liverpool’s Curtis Jones where he was sent off at Tottenham.

‘I think Kluivert’s a lucky boy. In those situations, I don’t like to see a red card but the reason Liverpool will be frustrated is because Curtis Jones got sent off for something similar,’ the Reds legend said on Sky Sports.

‘In full speed, it doesn’t look too dangerous but when you slow it down, it’s a shocker. It’s a red card. It’s a nasty challenge.

‘I think they just get to the right decision. When you see it at full speed, there’s not too much there.

‘But there will be frustration on Liverpool’s side and understandably so because of Curtis Jones.’

Carragher’s fellow Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said at the time that incidents like Jones’ sending off were ‘ruining the game’ and also stated that the slow motion replays can make fouls look worse.

‘A yellow is right. I know when you’re doing someone, I’ve done it myself. He wasn’t there to do someone,’ the Manchester United legend said back in September.

‘I maybe wrong, but I just do not know any more. In slow motion, you will come to the conclusion it is a red card.’
