James May reveals ‘brutal truth’ about future with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond

James May’s turn as guest editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today saw him give hope to fans about a new show with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The Grand Tour and Top Gear star, 60, took to the airwaves on Wednesday morning after it was reported last month that the trio had filmed the finale of their show.

There will be no more The Grand Tour – but it might not mean the end of the dream team.

Asked on the Today programme if they could reunite on another project, James said: ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.

‘We’ve got two (episodes of the Grand Tour) in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see.’

James was pressed for any hints on what was coming up, but the star insisted ‘”I can’t reveal that because the brutal truth is I don’t know yet.’

The trio first hit our screens together in 2003 on Top Gear, before all three left in 2015; it was just months later when they reunited for The Grand Tour, which launched on Amazon Prime in 2016.

The next The Grand Tour special set in Mauritania will launch in February 2024, before the final episode later in the year.

However other aspects of James’ Today show weren’t quite as exciting, as he spoke at length about tea, and complained about garden centres.

He declared that ‘Britain is falling apart because we don’t drink enough tea.’

It led to complaints about the show not exactly being riveting, with listeners taking to social media to air their grievances.

Writing on Twitter, aka X, user Janczek said it was ‘the dullest radio I think I’ve ever heard; a whole new level of tedium.’

Simon Tanner complained it was ‘such dull radio,’ while Alan said he had ‘flicked it off.’

Billie Joe McAllister absolutely ripped into the show, describing it as ‘dull and lightweight.’

He added: ‘James May is perhaps the least thought provoking guest editor #r4today has ever chosen.’

Not everyone felt the same however, with some listeners praising the programme for being so relaxed.

Linda Floyd said there was ‘nobody moaning, giving vent to grievances or sharing their personal difficulties,’ calling it ‘a refreshing change.’

Fellow tea enthusiast Mary Kenny was also full of praise, and joined in the conversation writing:’Real Tea is made in a pot, with boiling water, not a teabag dunked in a cardboard cup. Loose tealeaves ideal, but good quality teabags – in the pot – acceptable. A decent cuppa hard to find!’
