James Bulger’s mum pleads killer Jon Venables stays behind bars ahead of parole hearing

The mum of James Bulger has issued a desperate plea to parole board chiefs as her child’s killer Jon Venables will make a bid for freedom this week.

Denise Fergus said her son’s killer is ‘a monster’ as Venables is set to meet with the parole board tomorrow after a decade behind bars for child pornography.

Two-year-old James was brutally murdered in March 1993 by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both aged ten, in a brutal killing that shocked the nation.

James was led away from a shopping mall in Liverpool by the pair and was tortured by having bricks thrown at him – before being left for dead on train tracks.

Mum Denise now told The Mirror: ‘Tuesday is one of the biggest days ever in our fight for justice for James. It feels like D-Day.

‘I’m anxious and it’s been hard not to think of much else because the importance of this week is so great.

‘Our fate is in the hands of parole board bosses, so I beg them to make the right decision for everyone and keep my son’s killer behind bars.’

In a plea to the parole board she said: ‘Look into my eyes and see what I’ve had to deal with for 30 years – three decades of hell. Keep people safe from this monster, because that is what he is, and don’t give him what he wants.’

Both Venables and Thompson spent eight years in a secure juvenile detention unit, but were released on license in 2001 and were given lifetime anonymity.

Venables, however, returned to jail twice after being found in possession of child abuse images.

Despite the horror Denise and former husband Ralph endured, they have been blocked from attending Venables’ parole hearing.

The family have previously said they are angry members will not be able to speak at the private hearing but parole officers will remain in touch with Ralph Bulger and Denise Fergus over potential living arrangements for Venables if he is released.

Both Ralph and Denise shared concerns in separate impact statements that Venables will likely re-offend if released.

Denise said: ‘If he goes on to commit more crimes after you release him, it will be on your shoulders. So, I’m just asking you to do the right thing.’

The hearing may be the last time Venables can appeal before new parole reforms come before Parliament.

Under the Victims and Prisoners Bill proposed by former Justice Secretary Dominic Raab, reoffending criminals considered dangerous will never be released from prison.

But Ralph Bulger said victims must be able to attend parole hearings.

‘Tuesday is one of the biggest days ever in our fight for justice for James. It feels like D-Day.’
