2023 Women’s World Cup: Jamaica 0-0 Brazil: Jamaica make history as they reach last-16 and Brazil crash out
Jamaica made history after holding onto a 0-0 draw against Brazil – securing their spot in the last-16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The tense match in Melbourne saw Jamaica put up a formidable defensive display to force Brazil out in the group stages. It’s the first time in 28 years Brazil have failed to progress to the last-16.
The game saw end-to-end action with both teams coming close to scoring, and both teams fighting until the final whistle.
Brazil offered up a star-studded lineup including the legendary striker Marta – in her final World Cup appearance.
Marta, 37, holds the title of all-time leading scorer in men’s or women’s World Cups with an astounding 18 goals to her name. Despite her talent and experience, her sixth World Cup came to an end after making three appearances in the group stage.
For Jamaica, it was a huge occasion. Their impressive performance throughout the tournament so far has earned them a well-deserved place in the last-16 – a feat they have never accomplished before.
Jamaica end the group stage in second place, meaning they will face either Colombia or Germany – who play tomorrow morning.
Whilst it won’t be an easy knockout stage match, few would have bet on Jamaica making it to the round of 16 and with many supporters behind them, the Reggae Girlz will now be eyeing up another win – and more history-making.
