Jadon Sancho ‘showing up’ Man Utd with Chelsea form with dig aimed at Erik ten Hag

Tim Sherwood has mocked Manchester United over their decision to let Jadon Sancho join Chelsea, insisting the winger is ‘showing up’ Erik ten Hag.

Sancho left United to join Chelsea on a season-long loan deal in August in a deal which includes an obligation to buy if certain targets are met.

The winger has racked up three assists in his first three starts for the Blues who currently sit in fourth place, impressing once again in the 4-2 win over Brighton on Saturday.

United meanwhile endured a miserable weekend, hammered 3-0 by Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United’s loss has been Chelsea’s gain with Sherwood lamenting the decision to let Sancho leave Old Trafford and ten Hag’s inability to repair his relationship with the Londoner.

‘They are relying on moments,’ Sherwood told SuperSport during their coverage of the game. ‘They are relying on people with pace. With Garnacho, head down, pace, run. The same with Rashford.

‘They had a boy Jadon Sancho who is showing them up at the moment. I watched him play yesterday for Chelsea, he balances them on the right-hand side, he comes into those pockets.

‘Yes, he needed babysitting, but he [ten Hag] should have put his arm around him. First and foremost, the important thing is not how you feel as a person, it is getting the best out of him for the fans.

‘Sancho plays in that role off the centre forward. No wonder he can’t play at Man United because he has got no one to play off. I don’t know what Zirkzee is? Is he an 8? He is not a no.9. He is not a no.10 either. I don’t see what he’s got.’

In Ten Hag’s first season in charge, Sancho was withdrawn from the first-team and sent to Netherlands to work on his physical and mental wellbeing away from the glare of Old Trafford.

He returned to the squad in February 2023, scoring four times before the end of the season.

But in September last year, his relationship with the manager disintegrated when he was banished from the first-team due to his performances in training. Sancho spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

While Sancho was reintegrated to the United squad during pre-season, the decision was made to move him on.
