Italy win Euro 2020 final after penalty shootout victory over England
The Metro says: Italy are European champions for the second time in their history after prevailing in a penalty shootout against England at Wembley.
Jordan Pickford made two saves, including one from Jorginho that looked set to turn the tide in England’s favour, but Bukayo Saka’s effort was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma to give the Azzurri a momentous victory.
Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho also missed from the spot, as the Three Lions were left to contemplate coming so close to ending 55 years of hurt having failed to build on the most stunning of starts.
Gareth Southgate’s team selection raised several eyebrows before kick-off, with Kieran Tripper restored to the starting line-up at the expense of Bukayo Saka, which heralded a return to the 3-4-3 system which worked so well against Germany at the last 16 stage.
