Israel starts ground operation in southern Lebanon
Israeli troops have entered Lebanon in what the military is calling a “limited, localised and targeted” ground operation against Hezbollah.
The IDF says the targets inside southern Lebanon pose “an immediate threat to Israeli communities.”
The ground operation started as Israeli airstrikes continued. The IDF says it has hit Beirut whilst officials in Lebanon say a building in a Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon was hit.
On Monday, Hezbollah’s deputy leader Naim Qassem said the group was ready for an Israeli ground offensive and that the battle “may be long”.
More than 1,000 people have been killed in Lebanon in the past two weeks and around a million people are believed to have been displaced.
