Major investigation launched into sewage being dumped into rivers
The Metro says A major investigation has been launched into sewage treatment works after an public outcry over the amount of pollution found in the UK’s rivers.
The Environment Agency and water regulator Ofwat have warned they will take action against any firm that has been found to be releasing unpermitted sewage discharges into rivers and other waterways.
The investigation will look into more than 2,000 sewage treatment works across the country.
Water companies have been releasing wastewater directly into rivers, watercourses and the sea during heavy rain or storms to stop pipes becoming overloaded.
