India elections: Modi defeated in battleground state
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party has lost a key battleground state in the Indian elections amid a devastating Covid-19 scene in the country.
The BJP tried hard in West Bengal during the campaigning trail but the state was held by the incumbent Mamata Banerjee – a strong Modi critic.
Her win stunned political observers due to the time and money the BJP invested in the state.
PM Modi has been accused of spending more time on the election and polls than on the pandemic.
Despite the defeat in West Bengal, the BJP won nearly 80 seats to become the main opposition party in the state. Back in 2016, Modi’s party only won three seats in the state.
Elections also went ahead in Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala states as well as the territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry).
The BJP held power in the north-eastern state of Assam but failed to make major gains elsewhere.
India Covid-19 crisis
Daily cases in India have topped 300,000 for 10 straight days. On Monday, it recorded more than 360,000 new cases and 3,417 deaths. On Sunday, the country set a new record for daily deaths, with 3,689.
Hospitals in India are overwhelmed and the health service is facing a shortage of beds and oxygen.
It has left many to turn to social media to issue pleas for international help. Many countries are responding to the crisis, the US and UK have sent medical aid. Today, Egypt announced it was sending 30 tons of medical supplies.
