Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi jailed for illegal marriage
Imran Khan and his wife have been sentenced to seven years in a Pakistani court, which declared their 2018 marriage un-Islamic and illegal.
The former prime minister is already serving time for corruption and recently faced a conviction for profiting from state gifts, just a week before a general election.
Imran Khan, 71, asserts that the various cases against him are politically motivated.
The court, set up inside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, heard a complaint from Bibi’s ex-husband, alleging fraud in her marriage to Khan. The court determined that Bibi had remarried before the required time following her divorce.
In addition to the seven-year jail term, a fine of 500,000 rupees ($1,800; £1,420) was imposed on Khan and Bibi.
Khan has been detained since his arrest last August. His latest prison sentence in his third in less than a week. On Tuesday he was jailed for 10 years for leaking classified documents. He (and his wife) were given 14-year sentences in Wednesday’s court case – that accused them of keeping of selling state gifts received in office, including jewellery from the Saudi Crown Prince.
