Society Of The Snow has captivated Netflix viewers as it tells the ‘unforgettable’ story of the survivors of a devastating plane crash.
On 13 October 1972, a flight with 45 people on board took off from Uruguay and headed for its destination in Chile, but never made it.
The plane crashed into the unforgiving snow-covered landscape and left those on board having to battle the elements just hoping to survive.
In the days that followed, 16 of the survivors had to eat the flesh of those that perished in order to stay alive while two of the group, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, left the group to find help.
The pair climbed the 4,650-metre mountain peak and hiked for 10 days before finding help. They were miraculously rescued after 72 nights in the brutal frozen conditions.

Alive

Released in 1993 and starring Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton, Alive tells the incredible story of the Uruguayan rugby team’s crash.
One of the survivors, Nando Parrado, who Hawke portrayed, served as the technical advisor for the film.

The Revenant

Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domnhall Gleeson joined forces for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, released in 2016.
The grisly film is based on the wild true story of Hugh Glass, played by DiCaprio, an American frontiersman who was left for dead after being attacked by a bear and his fight for survival in the harsh elements.

In the early nineties, Christopher McCandless (also known as Alexander Supertramp) found an abandoned bus, Fairbanks Bus 142, which he used as a makeshift shelter and mode of transport across the US and he chased an increasingly nomadic lifestyle.
His action-packed life was told in the 2007 biographical film Into The Wild, directed by Sean Penn with Emile Hirsch taking on the role of McCandless.

Daniel Radcliffe takes on the role of Israeli adventurer Yossi Ghinsberg as he delves deep into the Amazon Jungle in this 2017 film.
It is based on the true story of Yossi himself, who in 1981 survived three weeks in the uncharted Bolivian Amazon jungle in a miraculous feat.

Everest

Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, and Sam Worthington are all part of the star-studded cast of 2015’s Everest.
They tell the terrifying tale of the 1966 Mount Everest disaster when eight climbers caught in a blizzard died while attempting to descend from the summit. Several climbing teams were on the mountain at the time of the blizzard, including the Mountain Madness team led by Scott Fischer (portrayed by Gyllenhaal).

The Impossible

Before Spider-Man, Tom Holland starred in The Impossible, his film debut alongside Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts.
It tells the incredible true story of María Belón and her family in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a Spanish physician holidaying in Thailand at the time of the disaster who survived with her husband Enrique Álvarez and three sons Lucas, Simón, and Tomás.

Thirteen Lives

Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, and Tom Bateman were all praised for their stellar performances in 2022 biographical thriller Thirteen Lives.
It is based on the Tham Luang cave rescue in 2018, in which a junior association football team with 12 members aged between 11 and 16 as well as their coach were rescued from the cave system after heavy rainfall caused flooding that saw them trapped inside.

Rabbit-Proof Fence

In 2002’s Rabbit-Proof Fence, three mixed-race girls are torn from their Aboriginal mother and sent more than a thousand miles away to a camp as part of a government policy to integrate them into white society, leading to their daring escape and epic journey back home.
The film is loosely based on the heartbreaking story true story of Molly Craig, Daisy Kadibil and Gracie Cross, who escaped from the Moore River Native Settlement, north of Perth, Western Australia.

Apollo 13

The idea of a disaster occurring in space is almost too terrifying to fathom, but that is what iconic 1995 film Apollo 13 tackles, with the help of Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton.
The film is based on the real-life seventh manned mission to the moon in 1970, in which an oxygen tank in the service module on the craft ruptured two days into the mission, disabling its electrical and life-support system.

127 Hours

Following its release in 2010, 127 Hours was nominated for six Academy Awards, and selected by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of 2010.
Starring James Franco, Kate Mara, Amber Tamblyn and Clémence Poésy, it takes place in 2003 and tells the story of canyoneer Aron Ralston who becomes trapped under a boulder in the Bluejohn Canyon, Utah, and must find a way to escape.
