‘BBC staff rocked’ after being told about Huw Edwards’ charges ‘hours before the public’

BBC staff were allegedly left feeling rocked amid the news that Huw Edwards had been charged with making indecent images of children. Staff at the Beebs were “told hours before” the news was made public.

On Monday, it was announced that the BBC newsreader had been charged with making indecent images of children. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said at the time: “Huw Edwards, 62, of Southwark, London has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children following a Met Police investigation. The offences, which are alleged to have taken place between December 2020 and April 2022, relate to images shared on a WhatsApp chat

“Edwards was arrested on November 8 2023. He was charged on Wednesday, June 26 following authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service. He has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 31. Media and the public are strongly reminded that this is an active case. Nothing should be published, including on social media, which could prejudice future court proceedings.”

Photo finish sees Team GB win dramatic sixth Olympic gold in women’s quad sculls

Team GB won a stunning gold medal in the women’s quad sculls rowing final, finishing just 0.15 seconds ahead of the Netherlands, with the result going to a photo finish.

The Netherlands had taken an early lead in Wednesday morning’s race, pulling out clear from Team GB, Germany and Ukraine. But the British team of Lauren Henry, Hannah Scott, Lola Anderson and Georgie Brayshaw fought back from fourth place to overtake Germany before passing Ukraine.

With 500m to go though the Netherlands still held the lead, with Team GB seemingly struggling to get a foothold. From nowhere though, British quad pushed hard to overtake the Netherlands, crossing the line just ahead of their rivals.

BBC confirms corporation did know about Huw Edwards’ arrest last year and still paid him

The BBC has confirmed it was aware of presenter Huw Edwards’ arrest in November last year, and continued to pay him.

Former BBC News anchor Edwards arrived at Westminster Magistrates Court today, where he faced charges of seven Category A, the worst category, 12 Category B, and 22 Category C indecent images of children. He now faces a maximum of ten years in prison as Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

The court heard that he was involved in an online chat with an adult man on WhatsApp between December 2020 and August 2021, who sent him 377 sexual images, of which 41 were indecent images of children. The bulk of these, 36, were sent during a two-month period.

The BBC has today admitted it knew Edwards had been arrested in November 2023, when he was suspended from the corporation. They said they were “shocked” to hear the details that have emerged in court. In their statement, the BBC said: “The BBC is shocked to hear the details which have emerged in court today. There can be no place for such abhorrent behaviour and our thoughts are with all those affected.
