The Coronation of King Charles III is set to be marked in Scotland today with a series of events along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

The ‘Scottish coronation’ which will see The King presented with the ‘Honours of Scotland’ – the oldest Crown Jewels in Britain – while a royal processionPalace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles’ Cathedral, and a thanksgiving service featuring  the Stone of Destiny, used in the May coronation, will also be held.

One of the highlights of the day though is expected to be the Red Arrows flypast, which is set to take place after the main event and after the royal party has returned to Holyroodhouse.

But when is the RAF flypast? Here’s all you need to know…

When is the Red Arrows flypast?

The Red Arrows flypast is due to happen at around 3.40pm on Wednesday.

It will be the final part of the day’s formal proceedings, with the royal party due to arrive at Holyroodhouse at 3.27pm.

The flypast will also be preceeded by a Gun Salute as the procession leaves Edinburgh Castle at 3.20pm.

Key timings for King Charles’ Scottish coronation

1.15pm:  People’s Procession departs Edinburgh Castle Esplanade
1.30pm: People’s Procession arrives at St Giles’ Cathedral
1.40pm:  The Honours of Scotland leave Edinburgh Castle Esplanade under military escort
1.40pm:Military pipe and drums bands and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment move from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to West Parliament Square
1.50pm:  The Honours of Scotland arrive at West Parliament Square by vehicle
2.05pm:  Royal Procession leaves the Palace of Holyroodhouse
2.10pm:  Royal Procession arrives at St Giles’ Cathedral

    3.15pm:  Service ends

3.27pm:  Royal party arrive at Palace of Holyroodhouse
3.40pm:  RAF flypast down the Royal Mile

It comes just weeks after the flypast arranged for the coronation in London had to be scaled back due to bad weather.

On that occasion the fleet of 60 planes was chopped down to helicopters and a flypast from the Red Arrows.

It eventually took place during the Trooping The Colour ceremony, marking the King’s birthday, on Saturday June 17.

What is the route for the flypast?

The Scottish Government website has confirmed that the flypast will take place along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

It will head from the direction of Edinburgh Castle towards Holyroodhouse where it will be watched by the royals.

    How to watch the flypast

BBC One will be airing live coverage of events from 1.30pm until 3.45pm – which will take in the Thanksgiving service as well as the procession and flypast.

If you miss it you’ll be able to catch up via BBC iPlayer.

Those in the area will also be able to go along to the Royal Mile to watch the celebrations in person.

Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf said: ‘I will attend the Service at St Giles’ Cathedral and I look forward to representing the people of Scotland at this historic event.

‘Any members of the public who wish to get involved will be able to follow TV or radio coverage, or view events in person along the Royal Mile.

‘Space will be limited so those planning to come should arrive early and be prepared for whatever the weather may hold.’
