Lawson Shines in Azerbaijan Grand Prix Amid Red Bull Legacy

Liam Lawson’s performance at the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix marked a significant milestone in his burgeoning Formula 1 career, showcasing resilience and newfound determination after a challenging demotion. The Racing Bulls driver clinched an impressive third on the grid following a strong Q3 lap on a slick Baku track. Despite finishing behind both Mercedes in the race, Lawson seized an opportunity to overtake teammate Yuki Tsunoda, securing a commendable fifth place.

How Lawson Bounced Back After Demotion

After being replaced at Red Bull early in the season, Lawson’s confidence took a hit. However, his recent performances have demonstrated notable improvement and determination. Initially struggling to adapt, Lawson faced tough competition from rookie teammate Isack Hadjar, being outqualified eight times to one in their first nine sessions together. Despite setbacks, including technical issues hindering his efforts, Lawson has rebounded effectively.

    Progress Post-Demotion

From Japan to Canada, Lawson has dramatically narrowed the performance gap, significantly improving his average one-lap deficit against Hadjar. Key insights indicate he has consistently converted qualifying presence in Q3 into top-eight finishes, excluding a puncture at the Dutch Grand Prix. His impressive tally of 26 points positions him as F1’s eighth-best performer since summer, reinforcing his pivotal role in helping Racing Bulls climb from eighth to sixth in the constructors’ standings.

A Shift in Focus: Beyond Red Bull

Lawson’s trajectory has led to a pivotal shift in his aspirations. While once fixated on returning to Red Bull, he now embraces a broader ambition. “I spent a long time just looking at how to get to Red Bull Racing, but now I realise that winning is the ultimate goal, regardless of the team,” he remarked during the press conference leading up to the Azerbaijan GP. This revelation highlights a maturation in Lawson’s perspective on his racing career, illustrating a pursuit of excellence that transcends the confines of a single team.

    Looking Ahead

As the 2026 season approaches, Lawson’s growing credibility within the Racing Bulls squad offers a strong case for retaining his seat. With his recent performances painting a picture of resilience and potential, the question remains: Will Lawson continue to ascend, carving his name into the annals of Formula 1 lore, with or without Red Bull?

As the new race season unfolds, fans and pundits alike will be keeping a keen eye on Lawson’s journey—a testament to the tenacity and spirit of a driver determined to make his mark in the highly competitive world of Formula 1.
