This significant milestone underscores her extensive expertise and dedication, marking a moment of pride not only for Dubbelman but for the broader motorsport community.

How Claire Dubbelman Became the First Woman with an FIA Race Director Superlicence

Dubbelman’s journey into the world of motorsport began at a young age. The daughter of Huub Dubbelman, a seasoned automotive journalist, Claire’s passion was kindled in her youth by early mornings spent watching Formula 1 with her father.

By the time she was nine, her enthusiasm had blossomed, leading to memorable days at the Zandvoort circuit.

After completing her degree in international communication, Dubbelman entered the automotive sector, eventually finding herself in Formula Renault. There, she undertook various roles including arranging trophies and maintaining sporting regulations.

Then came her big opportunity and she took it. It was also during this time that she made her first foray into race control, where she communicated crucial decisions to teams over the radio.

    Transition to FIA

Dubbelman’s initial work with the FIA started as a freelance media delegate during the Formula 3 Euro Series. By 2017, she had secured a full-time position as championship manager, responsible for overseeing junior series like Formula 2 and Formula 3. Her ascent continued, leading her to a pivotal role as a race control operator in Formula 1.

In 2023, Dubbelman made history by receiving the FIA race director superlicence, a requirement established for those who impact race outcomes. “This licence confirms I am qualified for the role of deputy race director,” she stated. Dubbelman’s accomplishment not only positions her among the elite in motorsport but also highlights the ongoing challenges women face in the industry.

Despite her achievements, Dubbelman notes that she often remains the only woman at the table in various F1 discussions. However, she observes a positive shift within the FIA, which is gradually increasing its female representation across various roles.

    Women in Motorsport Today

Recent developments within the FIA reflect a growing recognition of women’s capabilities in key positions. Dubbelman proudly highlights the presence of women in operational roles, contributing to a more equal representation, but also her achievements and hard work, she’s put the hard yards in.

With her eyes set on further advancements, Dubbelman expresses her ambition to one day become a race director. “Teamwork is crucial, and the environment has evolved to support this,” she explained. While she acknowledges the challenges ahead, her determination to make an impact in Formula 1 remains steadfast.

She is there on merit, don’t doubt it!

Claire Dubbelman’s historic achievement as the first woman with an FIA race director superlicence marks an important step forward for gender representation in motorsport. But don’t let that cloud your judgement as to why she made it, she is there on merit, tenacity and hard work, clear and simple.

She continues to break barriers, Dubbelman stands as a beacon of inspiration for future generations of women in sport. Her story exemplifies the importance of perseverance and dedication in a traditionally male-dominated arena.
