Horizon Forbidden West MMO job ad discovered – could be a mobile game

Horizon Forbidden West – do you want to play a MMO version on mobile? (Picture: Sony)

The Horizon MMO from NCSoft seems to be called Land Of Salvation and may be part of a new push for mobile games from PlayStation.

Going into the new year we know virtually nothing about PlayStation’s plans for 2024 and beyond, and most of what do know comes from the Insomniac hack from the end of last year. Not only does Sony not have any scheduled first party exclusives at the moment but it’s unclear whether their plans for multiple new live service games is still what they’re aiming for.

The Last Of Us Online had definitely been cancelled but what has happened to the others, including already announced titles such as Fairgame$ and Concord, is a mystery.

At one point, Sony was planning a dozen such titles and one they never announced, but was already leaked back in 2022, was a Horizon MMO by South Korean developer NCSoft. And new evidence suggests that hasn’t been cancelled.

The project was originally rumoured with the codename Project H and is apparently now referred to internally as Project Skyline.

Its actual name, though, seems to Land Of Salvation. Or at least that’s a new domain that NCSoft recently registered and which doesn’t seem to relate to anything else they’re working on – plus, it sounds very Horizon-y.

More concrete evidence of the games’ continued development comes from a job listing on LinkedIn, which includes a Project Skyline logo very much in the style of the regular Horizon one.

Leaker Kurakasis claims that the game will launch after NCSoft’s Aion 2, which may not be out until 2025. So that means the game is not imminent and may not be officially revealed this year.

Supposedly, NCSoft has around 140 people currently working on the game, which will also be released for PC and mobile.

In recent years, Sony has all but giving up making major new mobile games and it seems likely that the deal with NCSoft is both an attempt to leverage their expertise with games like Lineage and Guild Wars, and to ensure a product that appeals to the Asian markets where mobile is especially big.

This also seems to confirm that the MMO is not the same as the rumoured multiplayer game from original series creator Guerrilla Games, which is believed to feature more cartoonish visuals than the main games.

That’s never been officially announced either and since it’s also believed to be a live service title its fate may end up being the same as The Last Of Us Online.

That makes it difficult to say what the next Horizon game will be, as reports suggest plans for a third mainline entry were rethought following the death of actor Lance Reddick, whose character Sylens was apparently meant to play a larger role in the next game.
