Dwight Yorke has warned Jadon Sancho he’s on ‘borrowed time’ at Manchester United and may only have more chance to revive his Old Trafford career.
Much was expected of Sancho when he completed a £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.
But the 23-year-old has largely flattered to deceive in the Premier League – scoring nine goals in 55 games – and was training away from the United first-team earlier in the season.
Sancho returned to the senior squad and enjoyed a better finish to the 2022-23 campaign – scoring in United’s final-day victory over Fulham – but Yorke still has doubts over the England international.
‘It’s a bit of a mystery with Jadon Sancho,’ Yorke told AceOdds. ‘He had so much potential and hope when he joined Manchester United.
‘It was a huge investment and he did a really amazing job when he was at Dortmund.
‘For some reason the transition from there to Manchester hasn’t really worked out in the way that we all thought it might for him.

‘He’s really struggled, whether it’s from a mental point of view, which seems to be well documented. He hasn’t really lived up to the price tag.
‘So yeah, he’s on borrowed time, I suppose, because he hasn’t really produced the goods that we expected.
‘Maybe he should be given another chance, another lifeline. But he’s on borrowed time as far as I’m concerned.’

Despite Sancho’s underwhelming spell in Manchester, Ian Wright has seen enough to believe he will go to another level next season.
Speaking on Match of the Day, the former Arsenal striker said: ‘Erik ten Hag knows the potential Jadon Sancho has.
‘He recognised that he needed a little bit of a break and sent him to Holland for a bit of physical and mental recuperation earlier in the season.
‘But we know the capability of this guy and know what he’s capable of in respects of his ability and skills.

‘Once he has that main focal point like he had at Dortmund with [Marco] Reus and people like that, he will do his stuff because we’re talking about somebody who, ability-wise, is absolutely top drawer.
‘He’s got six goals and three assists this season and I’m sure United want more from him after how much he cost, but I feel he’s starting to settle and you can feel that United will make more signings and he’ll have a lot more players to play off and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more from Jadon Sancho.
‘It’s brilliant, I’m delighted for him. I’m delighted for Erik ten Hag too. It’s been a great season for Manchester United and you can only see good things happening there. What they do this summer is going to be really interesting.’
