Harry Maguire was booed by Manchester United supporters following his mistake in a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
The £80 million defender gave the ball away in the build up to Nico Williams’ goal which put Bilbao in front in the 29th minute.
After his error, Maguire was booed by a section of United supporters at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, although other fans attempted to drown out the jeers with applause.
Maguire started alongside Victor Lindelof at the heart of United’s defence for their friendly against Bilbao, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Facundo Pellistri scored an equaliser in the 90th minute.
Earlier this summer, Maguire was stripped of the United captaincy by Ten Hag, who has opted to give the armband to Bruno Fernandes ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Maguire said he was ‘extremely disappointed’ by Ten Hag’s decision but has vowed to fight for his place at United.
Maguire, who started just eight Premier League games last season, has attracted interest from West Ham this summer.
However, West Ham’s opening bid of £20m has been rejected by United.
