More than 110 people have been brutally murdered in a slum in Haiti – most of them over the age of 60. The background to the murder is said to be rumors about voodoo magic being used on the child of a powerful criminal.

Criminal gangs rule large parts of Haiti with extreme violence. Attacks on the civilian population occur again and again. But the latest reports from the desperately poor island state are extreme even by local standards. According to a human rights group, a gang leader had at least 110 elderly people murdered.

According to the National Human Rights Defense Network, the incident occurred in the Cite Soleil slum. A gang leader was responsible, who wanted revenge for his eldest son’s illness. According to the report, Monel “Mikano” Felix went to a voodoo priest after the child became ill. The priest accused older people in the area of making the child ill with a spell.
