Hairy Bikers star Si King recalls ‘distressing’ and ‘difficult’ time after Dave Myers’ cancer diagnosis

Hairy Bikers star Si King has recalled the ‘distressing’ and ‘difficult’ period he faced after his co-star Dave Myers was diagnosed with cancer.

Last year Dave, 65, broke the news he was being treated for cancer, joking he would be a ‘baldy biker’ for a while.

In subsequent updates, he claimed to be ‘kind of doing alright’, although treatment was still ‘ongoing’, and he welcomed in 2023 by saying cancer was ‘something one learns to live with’.

In a new interview, Si has now opened up about hearing about his TV partner’s diagnosis, and the difficulties they faced.

Dave found out about his diagnosis while on holiday with his wife in France, and immediately called Si after hearing the doctor’s words.

‘I was driving. I had to pull over,’ Si recalled, looking back at the ‘distressing’ call in March, last year.

Talking about how difficult the past year has been for them both amid Dave’s cancer battle, he continued: ‘It’s so distressing. It’s very difficult to verbalise.’

Si said to The Times: ‘There’s a sense of loss, but there’s also that sense of hope, you know, knowing my mate as I do.

‘He’s a scrapper. He’s a fighter. But there were certain points that I thought, “Where’s it going to go? What is happening to my friend?”‘

During chemo-therapy sessions, of which he has had ’30 lots’ with ‘one little bit left’, Si went to stay with Dave.

‘He was very, very, very unwell,’ he added to the publication.

‘And it’s funny, you know, when you see somebody you love so much in so much distress, it’s very hard to know what to do.

‘My character and personality is naturally, I just want to fix it. I just want to fix it. I get very distressed when I can’t.’

Earlier this year, Geordie biker and beloved foodie divulged details of his ‘brutal’ chemotherapy treatment, as he revealed he’d lost ‘so much weight’ and struggled with losing his appetite and only being able to manage a can of soup.

He also revealed he had to ‘learn to walk again properly’ after chemotherapy affected his balance, which he reflected was a ‘disaster for a biker’.

The pair are now returning back to work and our screens with a new series, as Dave takes a ‘huge step back to normality’.

The eight-part series The Hairy Bikers Go West will follow the culinary delights of Britain’s west shores as the duo celebrate the food and people along the way.

‘It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really what food I’ve been having,’ he said.

Dave added to The Mirror that the beloved duo are back to filming a new TV series, saying ‘it is a huge step back to normality’.

‘It’s a work in progress and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike,’ he shared.
