Express Sport – Guilty Tonali Facing Ban
Sandro Tonali ‘faces maximum three-year ban’ after admitting betting on his own team
EXPRESS SPORT SAYS Sandro Tonali is facing a three-year worldwide ban from football after admitting to betting on AC Milan matches while still playing for the club. Tonali is likely to serve a lesser ban for helping with the investigation but will face strict punishment for his conduct.
The 23-year-old was one of the players named in an Italian football betting probe last week and was withdrawn from the national squad ahead of their 3-1 defeat to England on Tuesday night. On the same day as the game, Tonali admitted to betting on AC Milan matches while he was still on the books for the club – including fixtures he played in.
According to Article 26 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, his conduct could lead to a fine of at least £91,000 and a worldwide football ban for a maximum of three years. Newcastle United are understood to have been shocked by the news but are yet to comment on the situation at the time of writing.
