Glen Johnson says incoming Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino should keep faith with goalkeeping duo Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The former Tottenham and PSG boss is set to be announced as Graham Potter’s permanent successor very soon and the Argentine has already outlined his transfer plan for this summer.
It is said that bringing in a new goalkeeper is one of his first priorities as both Mendy and Kepa have struggled for fitness and form this season.
The former started the campaign as the No.1 but has not played since the World Cup thanks to a shoulder injury, and prior to that he had made just 11 appearances and kept just one clean sheet.
The latter has performed better than expected but is still not considered good enough to be the keeper at a top team having conceded just over a goal a game so far this season.
As a result, it has been reported that Chelsea are interested in making a £40million move for Inter Milan shot stopper Andre Onana, while Thomas Tuchel is keen on a reunion with Mendy at Bayern Munich.
However, it is also said that Pochettino has reservations over signing Onana, something that will no doubt please Johnson who thinks that the Blues should stick with the two keepers they currently have.

‘It’s not a signing that I’m fully against, but I just don’t believe that Chelsea need another goalkeeper right now,’ the former right-back told Betfred.
‘£40million is a lot of money for a goalkeeper but they did spend almost double that on Kepa, so Chelsea already has two well regarded goalkeepers at the club.
‘I don’t believe Chelsea need to focus on recruiting in this position right now as both Edouard Mendy and Kepa are very good on their day. I’d only sign Andre Onana if one of those two were to leave the club for big money.

‘I think he [Mendy] would be a big loss to Chelsea. He’s another player that’s seemed to struggle with the chaos at Chelsea at present, but when he had stable foundations around him when he first moved to the Premier League, then he seemed to be one of the best.
‘You can understand why Bayern Munich want him but I believe Chelsea should do all they can to keep him as I believe he’s their number one.’

Senegal international Mendy was pivotal to the Blues’ Champions League triumph in 2021 and to date has kept 49 clean sheets in 104 games for the club.
However, the 31-year-old appears destined to leave Stamford Bridge having rejected several offers to extend his contract which expires in 2025 – as does Kepa’s.
