Glastonbury denies posters reveal identity of mystery band The Churnups after accidentally sending fans into a frenzy

Glastonbury Festival has responded to speculation after fans were convinced the identity of a mystery band had been revealed.

Festival-goers have been theorising over who The Churnups might be after the unknown group appeared on the line-up for the Worthy Farm event this weekend.

They’re due to play on Friday on the famous Pyramid Stage at 6:15pm, just before Royal Blood.

With their presence on the bill still a great mystery, fans are convinced that Foo Fighters or Pulp are behind the pseudonym.

Now, Glasto organisers have clarified that the secret performer has not yet been announced, despite what some posters have said.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted a poster displayed on site last week with the words ‘Hey web cam!’, which appeared on the festival’s official live webcam on BBC.

Many believed it was part of the reveal, expecting something big to follow.

However, a Glastonbury spokesperson has confirmed to NME that the posters are not part of any kind of line-up reveal.

In a cheeky development, the original poster has now been replaced by one with the message: ‘Nothing to see here!’

The poster saga came after Radio 6 DJ Lauren Laverne only added fuel to the fire, speculating on her show that an announcement about The Churnups’ identity was imminent.

‘Right now, a band who – will they be there, who knows? I wonder,’ she said while looking ahead to the festival.

‘But Here We Are is certainly the name of their new album. Foo Fighters on 6 Music, this is out on RCA… Getting all churned up, as they might post on their social media feed…’

Indeed, Foo Fighters did release a cryptic message online recently, which left fans scratching their heads before deciding they are defo the secret Glasto performers.

A handwritten note on the band’s Twitter account read: ‘Hey. It’s been a while… Now that we’ve returned from our first run of shows, I felt compelled to reach out and thank you all for being there for us.

‘Every night, when I see you singing, it makes me sing harder. When I see you screaming, it makes me scream louder.

I *love* that someone at @glastonbury has thought of putting posters up for the @bbcglasto webcam to see! Really nice touch! Well done you! #Glastonbury2023 pic.twitter.com/dDllP7ZFJz

We’ve got another confession to make, you’d certainly be FOOlish to miss The Churnups

‘When I see your tears, it brings me to tears. And when I see your joy, it brings me joy.

‘But, I see you… and it feels good to see you, churning up these emotions together. Because we’ve always done this together. Time and time again. See you soon, David.’

Meanwhile, some believe The Churnups are Sheffield rockers Pulp, given that a) their diaries are free all of Glasto and b) if you churn something up, you get Pulp (very clever).

Who knows when the secret Glasto band will be unveiled but, until then, there are plenty of other names to get excited about.
