Glamorous blonde actress unrecognisable after transformation for boxing biopic
Prepare to see one ultra-glamorous blonde bombshell like you’ve never seen her before.
While on set for a new biopic, a 27-year-old American star was utterly unrecognisable, having physically transformed to play trailblazing boxer Christy Martin.
Photos alone certainly won’t give it away, so we’ll put you out of your misery by revealing the identity of the gorgeous actress.
It is… Sydney Sweeney! Yep, the Euphoria alum who frequently dazzles photographers in flowing gowns on red carpets and shares smouldering bikini snaps from vacation with her 22.4million Instagram followers.
Photos of the Madame Web star on set capture her for the first time in character as Christy, the ‘female Rocky’ who competed from 1989 to 2012 and held the WBC female super welterweight title in 2009.
The upcoming biopic is directed by David Michôd, with filming taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday.
Sydney has already been seen on set preparing for a training scene inside a gym.
She covered up her curves in casual attire, donning a slouchy brown t-shirt, a blue hoodie, and oversized jogging bottoms.
She also had a bandana around her head and sported a brunette curly wig which covered up her famous blonde tresses, as well as minimal makeup.
Sydney appeared in good spirits as she was escorted to set, walking with hands in her pockets.
Starring alongside Sydney is Ben Foster, who joins the cast as Christy’s coach and abusive husband, Jim Martin.
The pair were married in 1991. In 2010, Jim stabbed her repeatedly and shot her in the chest after the pair got into an argument when Christy told him she wanted a divorce and that she was seeing her high school sweetheart, Sherry Lusk.
Jim was convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and is currently serving a 25-year sentence.
Now, Christy works as a promoter and has been married to fellow former boxer Lisa Holewyne, whom she met in the ring, since 2017.
She came out as a lesbian after her marriage ended.
Speaking about the project telling her life story, Christy previously expressed her joy over Sydney taking the lead.
She told TMZ that she is thrilled about the casting, especially as Sydney has experience in MMA and combat sports.
The Emmy-nominated actress has also shared how she’s gearing up for the challenge, describing the part as ‘physically and emotionally demanding’.
‘I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old,’ Sydney told Deadline after the film’s announcement.
She added: ‘I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body.
‘Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry.
‘But I love challenging myself.’
She went on to profess her adoration for the athlete, saying: ‘Christy Martin not only legitimised female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse.
‘I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains.’
The White Lotus favourite also said she felt ‘compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her’.
She branded what Christy has been through in her life ‘powerful and emotional.’
Christy can certainly trust that the biopic is in safe hands, with its director’s past credits including War Machine, Animal Kingdom, and The Rover.
‘I have a history of making movies about damaged men and I’d been wanting to make a film about a woman with a ferocious energy inside her,’ he said.
‘When I came across the Christy Martin story two years ago I knew I’d found it. Her ferocity is intelligible and justifiable and audiences will crave it because of the circumstances she was forced to endure’.
The film is due to launch at the Cannes Film Festival.
