Get to know the squad: Player profile | Ella Toone
The England midfielder Ella Toone has been named in the England senior squad for the upcoming World Cup. The Manchester United forward was brought into the senior team for the first time in September 2020.
Under England boss Sarina Wiegman, Toone has become a regular member of the team. She is a popular member of the squad both on the pitch and in the dressing room. She has scored consistently under Wiegman and bagged hat-tricks during the World Cup qualifiers.
She’ll be wearing shirt number 10 for the Aust-New Zeland World Cup.
In a recent interview, Ella Toone said she believes the lioness will enjoy the pressure of heading into the World Cup “with a target on their backs,” following their EURO 2022 success.
“There’s definitely a lot of favourites. A lot of unbelievable teams and a lot of talent. For us it’s taking each game as it comes and not focusing too far ahead. We know there’s a lot of big teams and they will make it hard.
“We don’t know about the distractions and the talk away from it. We’re in our own little bubble. We know it’s going to be difficult.”

Toone’s performance in midfield will be key to success, but the 23-year-old has the confidence and ability to see the team through to victory.
Toone has been a regular in England’s WU17, WU19 and WU21 teams, and represented the Young Lionesses at the 2016 FIFA U17 World Cup in Jordan.
Her footballing career started with Manchester United’s centre of excellence. From there she went on to join Blackburn Rovers, where she stayed for three seasons before signing to Manchester City in 2016.
Her time at City wasn’t easy and she struggled to make it to the first-team so when a chance to return to Manchester United arose in 2018, she took it. Toone was one of seven players who returned to Man United that summer having played for them at youth level before their women’s team was formed.
Since then she has shone at United and under Sarina Wiegman, she was elevated into the England senior set-up.
