Germany to shoot down drones near military sites
The German government has approved measures allowing the military to shoot down suspicious drones near military installations and other critical infrastructure. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasised the increasing drone threats since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, stating that the technology poses significant challenges for police forces.
Russia has been accused of waging a “shadow war” against Western nations supporting Ukraine, with allegations of sabotage attempts targeting airliners, critical infrastructure, and democratic processes. While Russia denies these claims, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently stated, “I can only confirm that Russia planned acts of air terror, not just against Poland but against airlines across the globe.”
Tusk’s comments appeared to corroborate a New York Times report that U.S. President Joe Biden had previously warned Russian President Vladimir Putin about such plans.
In November, Polish prosecutors alleged that a series of parcel fires targeting European courier companies were test runs for sabotaging flights to North America. This revelation came as NATO increased its surveillance of ships in the Baltic Sea following damage to undersea cables last year.
Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
