Germany sends much-awaited Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine
According to the German defence ministry, the first shipment of Leopard 2 tanks has been sent to Ukraine, with 18 modern main battle tanks delivered after Ukrainian crews were trained to use them.
The German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, expressed confidence that the tanks would make a significant contribution on the frontlines of the war in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian government has yet to comment on the arrival of the Leopard 2s, but they have confirmed the arrival of the first UK-made Challenger 2 tanks.
The Leopard 2 is widely regarded as one of the best main battle tanks produced by NATO countries, with around 2,000 currently in use by European countries.
After initially being reluctant to supply the tanks to Ukraine or permit other countries to do so, Germany agreed to the sale in January, with Berlin required to approve any re-exportation of the Leopard 2s.
In addition to the tanks, Germany has also sent two specialist tank-recovery vehicles and 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defense confirmed that Ukrainian tank crews trained in Britain had returned home after completing their training with Challenger 2 tanks.
