Germany 1-1 South Korea: Shock as Germany knocked out of World Cup in group stages
In yet another major 2023 World Cup upset, two-time world champions Germany have been knocked out in the group stages in the biggest shock of the tournament so far.
It’s the first time in Germany’s history they have failed to reach the knockout stages.
Germany drew 1-1 with South Korea, meaning they finished in the group stage in third place.
When Germany’s group was drawn it was widely considered to be the easiest group for Germany to sail out of. But in a world cup that’s already seen major upsets including Brazil being knocked out and the USA barely scraping through to the Round of 16, it’s been a world cup like no other.
Group H played their last games today – the final group stage games – Colombia topped the group with 6 points and Morocco came in second place with 6 points (but a worse goal difference). Germany managed to get four points whilst South Korea managed to get 1 point after today’s draw.
Many had expected to see a Germany vs England quarter-final, but with Germany out, the Lionesses (if they beat Nigeria in the Round of 16) would face Colombia or Jamaica (depending on which team wins that last-16 match).
There are no world cup games on Friday, with the Round of 16 kicking off on Saturday with Switzerland vs Spain and Japan vs Norway.
