It’s no secret that Gen Z love to take everything that was hot in the 90s and 00s and breathe new life into it.
From Ugg Boots to oversized waist belts, concealer lips to micro sunglasses, the younger generation is bringing it all back.
And the latest trend they’re loving might cause painful flashbacks for some of you.
Remember those chunky highlights everyone so desperately wanted in the 2000s? Well, apparently those are the must-have hairstyle for 2024.
Think Kelly Clarkson on American Idol, picture the members of Atomic Kitten in the Whole again Music video, and who could forget Lindsay Lohan’s grunge-y red and bleached blonde do in Freaky Friday?
*Shudders in millennial horror*
The hair colour has even been given a new name by its new fans and is now being referred to as ‘funky hair’ by some and more aptly as ‘2000s hair’ or ‘Y2K hair’ by others.
A Gen Z TikToker named Bridget Des Grange recently shared a video of herself after adding the chunky dark and blonde highlights to her hair, claiming she’d ‘honestly never felt hotter than with this 2000s Kelly Clarkson hair.’
Bridget, who was born in 1998, regularly posts videos of herself dressed in a Y2K aesthetic and recreates iconic outfits worn by the likes of Paris Hilton, Ashley Tisdale and Hilary Duff.
She added: ‘This is your sign to do the funky hair colour in 2024.’
And she’s not the only person loving the nostalgia, as the hashtag #chunkyhighlights has over 206 million views currently on TikTok, with #200shair also clocking up 31 million views.
Users including @itsizzyguti, @thelexiee, and @itsbabychaos also shared viral videos showing off the bold hairstyle recently.
In Bridget’s comments, people were divided over the hairstyle, with some excited that the chunky highlights were back but others wishing they’d stayed gone.
TikToker @apache757 wasn’t impressed, as they posted a no entry sign emoji, saying: ‘We’ve already done chunky highlights in the 90s/early 00s.’
While @mom471161518 posted: ‘Been there, done that.’ And @mleahcichon wrote: ‘Oh boy… round 2 of this.’
Others pointed out that back in the day, the look was often referred to as ‘badger stripes’ or ‘streaks’. Doesn’t quite sound as hot, now does it?
However, a great deal of people in the comments ‘loved’ the look and thought it was ‘cute’.
@noelle_jaelan102 replied: ‘Chunky highlights have always been my fav, it’s so cute.’
Other 90s and noughties trends having an alarming revival
Low rise jeans. Thank God we’re yet to spot them with a visible G-string, but we’ll be sticking to high-waisted, tummy hugging cuts for now.
Disc belts. You know, those circular ones that make you look like you’ve won a wrestling match? Kudos to anyone who can pull these off. Alas, we at team Metro are not so chic.
Rhinestones. They’re everywhere. On tops. On faces. Don’t you dare sweat or wash your clothes, because they will fall off.
Jumpers with fake collars. See also, a fake little strip of ‘shirt’ hanging out of the bottom. One plus: you get two looks for one as the cossie livs bites.
Skirts over trousers. AKA Skousers. Vogue says they’re back, and who are we to question Vogue? We will not be partaking, though.
While a hairstylist, who posts under the username @marylewd claimed she was ‘tired’ of modern hairstyles and was excited for this look to return.
She commented: ‘Hairstylist here, it was fun to do these in the early 2000s. I’m tired of doing balayages. I’m for bringing it back.’
And @andrelonnl added: ‘2024 is all about going back to the 2000s.’
If that’s true then buckle up, because it’s going to be a long year folks…
