Gaza ceasefire deal being finalised – reports
Negotiators in Doha are reportedly finalising a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which could mark a significant step toward ending months of violence. As part of the deal, Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages in the initial phase, Israeli officials confirmed.
The proposed agreement aims to halt 15 months of fighting, bring stability to the Middle East, and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It would also ensure the return of hostages taken by Hamas during its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Of the 251 hostages taken, 94 remain in captivity, including at least 34 confirmed dead, according to Israeli authorities.
The first phase of the deal involves a 42-day ceasefire, during which most of the 33 hostages expected to be released are believed to be alive. However, Israel anticipates that some of the returned hostages will be deceased. Israeli officials say they are ready to implement the deal as soon as it is signed.
US President Joe Biden echoed the optimism in a recent speech, stating that the United States is working hard to finalise the agreement. “This deal would free hostages, halt the fighting, provide security for Israel, and enable a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Palestinians who have endured immense suffering,” Biden said.
