Aaron Ramsdale’s chances of making the England squad for Euro 2024 will take a significant hit if he remains second-choice at Arsenal for the rest of the season, remains Gareth Southgate.
The Gunners goalkeeper has been named in the most recent England squad, alongside Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone.
However, he has fallen behind summer signing David Raya at Arsenal, losing his place in the starting XI in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Mikel Arteta appears to have made his decision and unless something changes then Ramsdale is set for plenty more time on the substitutes’ bench for the Gunners.
There are other goalkeepers hoping to break into the England squad, most notably Newcastle’s Nick Pope, amd Southgate has spoken to Ramsdale about how his lack of minutes at club level will impact his international chances.
‘We’re just going to have to see how it is. I had that conversation with him in the last camp,’ said Southgate. ‘He’s still battling to be the No 1 at Arsenal, and his profile and the way he can use the ball with his feet, we like and think is important.
‘But there is a reality as a keeper, if we get to March and he’s six months without playing regularly, then I’m never going to promise things that I couldn’t guarantee delivering. So he knows that, he’s perfectly realistic about that.’
Ramsdale will still hope to win his place back at Arsenal, or he may look to make a move in January, but Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is backing him to do the former, not impressed with Raya since he arrived in north London.
‘I think the goalkeeping situation has brought question marks, when I don’t think there was any need for it. I think [Aaron] Ramsdale’s done very well,’ Scholes said on TNT Sports.
‘OK, he’s probably not as good with his feet, but Ramsdale’s still very capable with his feet and this keeper [David Raya] has come in and he’s making mistakes every single week.’
