Games Inbox: The Game Awards GOTY prediction, RoboCop: Rogue City love, and Halo Infinite multiplayer

The Game Awards – what do you want to win? (Picture: The Game Awards)

The Wednesday letters page thinks there’s not enough time to make next year’s Call Of Duty, as a reader tries to predict the Switch 2.

    Odds-on favourite
It certainly is a packed field for the Game of the Year prize at The Game Awards, but while they’re definitely all top class games I think it’s really a two horse race between Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom and Baldur’s Gate 3.

They both got a very similar critical response, but I think the odds are against Zelda, since Breath Of The Wild already won previously and it’s only on one format, whereas Baldur’s Gate 3 is on two, and so more people are likely to have played it.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 is technically a sequel, the other two were so long ago it basically counts as a new franchise, which I think also gives it an advantage. I really would be fine with any of the five games winning but I think Baldur’s Gate 3 will take home the trophy and probably, overall, deserves to.

    Educated guess
I know it’s a mug’s game to predict Nintendo (and with the Switch still selling well, this could all change) but my prediction for a Switch 2 reveal would be around April, with the console released about six months later around October.

I know this is hardly an outlandish guess, but my reasoning would be that the last game on Switch’s current schedule is the Princess Peach one in March, so after that they’re free to start promoting a new console.

And if it is to be released in late 2024, they’re gonna want six months to start hyping it. Similar to what they did with the Switch (October reveal, late-March release if I remember?) Which couldn’t have worked out any better. A great first year of games also helped! Let’s hope Nintendo can strike the lightning twice…

GC: That seems a fair guess. We could see a minimal announcement around about April – perhaps just a logo – and then a full reveal in June, before an autumn launch.

    Chief omission
Neither Starfield nor Hogwarts Legacy are the biggest snubs from the Game Awards. It was expected. In my view, Halo Infinite is the biggest snub. How much that game has improved, and the dedication shown from 343 to their community is commendable. Halo Infinite should have been a nominee in a few categories. The irony is Destiny 2 was nominated instead, which has gone the opposite way to Halo. Shame on Microsoft for not promoting the revival of Halo Infinite. These redemption stories are becoming more common, Cyberpunk 2077 being the obvious example. Halo Infinite now falls into that category.

I can’t imagine GC have touched Halo Infinite in a long time. But if GC find the time, they should definitely revisit the game and you will see exactly what I mean. Microsoft are too focused upon Activision and the woes of Modern Warfare 3, whilst the franchise they are best known for is being ignored. Thankfully, the community hasn’t ignored the improvement of Halo Infinite. Player numbers have increased drastically, in spite of Microsoft’s negligence.

    Bigger fridge required
As this console generation continues, and my backlog and collection of games grows larger, I am looking to upgrade the storage in my PlayStation 5. Currently have a 1TB SSD installed, but I find myself having to frequently delete games to make room for new purchases.

Obviously, this is a minor problem in the grand scheme of things (or to another person, a non-existent one). However, I would enjoy some more storage and the capability to carry more games at once. Thus, I am inquiring as to which storage capacities the GC staff and readers utilise, their recommendations on brands, and what should be considered as commensurate value per gigabyte. Thanks everyone and happy gaming!

PS: I managed to get my PlayStation VR2 working after an exchange from Walmart. Gran Turismo 7 is awesome and Beat Saber is my favourite for late nights after the local pub!

GC: Since we rarely have the time to return to previously played games this isn’t really an issue for us.

    It’s Moblin’ time
Regarding people’s reservations about the Zelda movie being live action, it could have been far worse.

Imagine it were an animated Illumination production, I can see now all the characters Illumination style with ridiculously skinny legs, etc. They’d have murdered it!

So, Nintendo have taken the wise option and elected for a more appropriate film studio. This does mean that casting is more important than if it were an animated piece, but I am sure they will make good decisions. Pump up the budget and go along the Lord of the Rings route.

GC: The studio behind Morbius and the Emoji Movie doesn’t seem very appropriate to us. If they have to make a movie, we still think an animated one makes more sense. The Super Mario Bros. Movie looked great; we could’ve imagined Illumination rising to the challenge of making a more serious film.

    Short Circuit: Rogue City
Just completed RoboCop: Rogue City and wanted to say your review was spot on. The game’s not perfect but it’s far better than I ever imagined and one of my favourites of the year. Even if you’re not a RoboCop fan there’s a simple, uncomplicated style to it that is so refreshing in this time of over complicated games. It reminded me of something from the Xbox 360 days and I mean that only as a complete.

It wasn’t just dumb fun though as I did appreciate all the dialogue choices and weird optional missions. The developer clearly didn’t have that much money (although some of the graphics are great) but they were going all out to make the best game they could and I really respect that.

Like you say, the animation is pretty terrible, but beyond that and some of the voice-acting (definitely not Peter Weller though, he was great) it all worked for me. Even that song they kept playing, because it was the only one they had, was good.

I would absolutely love a RoboCop versus Terminator next, or an Aliens game, or Die Hard, or Ghostbuster, or… heck, give them all the 80s properties, they clearly have a way with them.

    The last choice
Considering that buying Activision Blizzard was supposed to be all about mobile game you’re right, Microsoft has barely ever talked about it. I mean what is the point of a Forza match-three puzzler? What a waste of time and money.

Why not try to drum up some interest in Fable with some kind of prequel or Halo Wars 3 but on a phone? There must be a hundred different Xbox ideas you could make on a phone before you get to a Forza puzzle game.

    Modern development
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 seems like a disaster, that I certainly won’t be picking up but I’m not clear that there’s much chance of next year’s been any better. I still don’t think any of the developers have the three years they need to make a decent title and, as a previous reader said, if they start having multiple flops in a row then there’s going to be some major problems.

The three year time limit is outdated by this point anyway. They started doing that in the Xbox 360 era and things have definitely changed since then. It seems to take five years minimum now, to make a decent game, and I don’t think any of the Call Of Duty games have had that, which explains the decline in quality.

Maybe they make up for a year or so with reused assets, since each game is so similar, but it seems like an impossible ask now, to get the games out like they used to. Microsoft was hinting at stopping Call Of Duty being a yearly franchise but so far I don’t see any sign of that happening. Something’s got to change though or the whole thing is going to crash and born.

    This week’s Hot Topic
The PlayStation 5 turned three years old on Sunday, and the Xbox Series X/S two days before that, so for this weekend’s Inbox we want to know how you think they’re both doing.

Do you own either console and if so, what do you think of them in terms of the hardware and the current software line-up? If you don’t own either console, why is that and what would convince you to get them?

What are your hopes and expectations for the future, for both formats, and do you think this console generation has so far been better or worse than the previous one?
