Another speculative fan render (Picture: Guided)
The Friday letters page is very glad games like Zelda and Baldur’s Gate 3 are selling well, as one reader ponders Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch.

Pretty good idea
While the PS5 Pro is controversial for lots of reasonable reasons, I don’t think anyone has any beef with the idea of a PS5 Slim, since it isn’t more powerful and doesn’t change how the games run. So I hope it does come out this year, because I still haven’t got a PlayStation 5 and was contemplating getting one for Christmas.
Although I really wish Sony would have a proper showcase beforehand, so I can get an idea for what they’ve got coming up next year and beyond. All this talk of games being delayed is kind of unnerving when they still won’t say what they are. Although if that’s code for, ‘We’ve realised the whole live service push wasn’t a good idea’ I’m all for it.
I just hope the Slim looks less… ugly than the current version. That description really didn’t explain anything and yet I got the impression it’s still going to be following the same basic design. If the alternative is something as clunky and ugly as that then just do a boring black box like usual. It might be dull but at least it’s not embarrassing.

Easy money
It’s unlikely I’ll get round to playing it myself this year, but I’m glad to see Baldur’s Gate 3 selling so well.
Along with Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom I’m hoping it shows developers that if you just make a good game, and don’t try to rip off your customers with microtransactions, etc. them people will quite literally buy into what you’re doing.

Ahead of yourself
After seeing the Reptile, Ashrah, and Havik video for Mortal Kombat 12 (which is what it is, Ed Boon!) I must confess to feeling the hype… a little. My only option, being just a poor boy from a poor family – spare me my life from this monstrosity – is the Switch version.
And, of course, for it to be possible on Nintendo’s console it will have to be using cloud computing, won’t it? So, the question is, will I need to pay for Nintendo’s online service in order to play it? I’m not interested in online multiplayer, which I always see as a fudge for having a mate in the room with you, so as long as I have the single-player modes and access to local then I’m good.
Will that be the case?

GC: Warner Bros. haven’t said anything about the Switch having a cloud version. It’s possible, but having a Switch version at all seems peculiar.

World of GTA
If Grand Theft Auto 6 is to surpass GTA 5, and if Rockstar wants to make its sequel a success, then one thing they could do is once the game is released begin working on a spectacular piece of DLC that lets people return to Liberty City or San Andreas or both. It would give the game something the past GTA games never could do and that’s give people the ability to revisit the full previous cities and would add a lot of content in the game. They could use additional voice actors with this and create bigger storylines, keeping GTA 6 fresh many years after the game comes out.
It is 2023 now and tech allows us to have bigger maps than what we could have and Rockstar should now be really utilising the potential of PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 to ensure that we get a dream GTA game that we will be happy to justify spending £70 or more on.
The radio content should also be increased and longer talk radio stations should be included, as GTA 5 via its online service did get extra radio stations. Not sure, though, if the talk radio stations will have the same feel now that Lazlow has left and am hoping that Maurice Chavez can come back with the original voice actor Philip Anthony Rodriguez, along with Fernado, aka Frank Chavez, on another station. Perhaps also bring Leyna Weber as Amy Sheckenhausen as a way to pay tribute to GTA: Vice City.

Paying forward
Assassin’s Creed Mirage can also be pre-ordered from The Game Collection for £37.95, also comes with the SteelBook edition.
I used my points I’d collected, so got it for £24.95. Then I also get £10 back in points once the game’s dispatched, which I will use towards Spider-Man 2. Every little helps.

Free advice
I know it’s been getting a bit of stick lately, but I just signed up for a freebie on Game Pass PC with my Xbox points. I’ve got enough points for four months at the moment, but the amount of points you accrue simply for playing – especially something like Forza Horizon, that just seems to assume you are playing with friends – I reckon I will be able to keep it free for ages.
Anyway, I’m impressed so far, but there is a glitch on Forza Horizon 5 on PC that I wondered if any other readers had experienced. And if they have, I may have a workaround.
As glitches go it’s a pretty big one, most of the time the game simply won’t launch… I did a bit of digging and it seems to be affecting a fair chunk of people! If it’s affecting you, first thing to do is turn off any FPS/system monitors like Afterburner, FRAPS or the Nvidia/AMD equivalents.
Second thing to do (and this really shouldn’t work, but it does) is when you launch the game, once the second, smaller splash screen appears just regularly click on the Forza Horizon 5 icon on the toolbar. It takes a while, but this seems to eventually override whatever causes the game to not launch and then get Forza Horizon 5 in at all its Mexican glory.
Never ever had this problem with Forza Horizon 4, which I actually bought with actual money!
Hopefully they will eventually fix it – but this workaround works for me.
Have fun gaming y’all!

GC: We don’t think anyone has ever criticised Game Pass itself.
The wrong Samus
The Samus amiibo character from Metroid Prime 1 and Remastered is in stock on the UK Nintendo Store now. I have just bought one. If you want one get one before they sell out here’s the link.
Andrew J.
GC: Samus in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is based on her appearance in Other M, not Metroid Prime. We guess because there hadn’t been a new Metroid game since the last Smash Bros.
Look who’s talking
I have to agree with the Take-Two CEO on Switch 2 backwards compatibility. It was kind of ironic how pro-consumer his comments were, on the back of the controversy over Red Dead Redemption being re-released with minimal effort. Perhaps he should have made those comments prior to their blatant cash grab.
It would be a bad look if Switch 2 isn’t backwards compatible. I suspect Nintendo will do the right thing. Whether they do free upgrades like on Xbox or charge extra for enhancements like on PlayStation remains to be seen. I think it will be the latter. But any form of backwards compatibility is only a good thing.
If it’s just a resolution/frame rate boost for older titles and you already own the game, I feel an additional fee is unreasonable. A full-on remake is fair enough, unless you keep going back to the well so often, like with The Last Of Us.
It will be interesting to see how Nintendo tackle backwards compatibility. I think Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) will be a key feature of Switch 2. So previous gen titles receiving significant boosts in resolution and performance is a distinct possibility. I hope so anyway. It will keep the tech nerds over at Digital Foundry happy, they will be giddy with excitement at the improvements. Each to their own.

Atlas Fallen – easy to shrug off is possibly my favourite review title ever, brilliant.

GC: Thanks.
Looking forward to picking up Diablo 4 cheap on Black Friday, now its honeymoon period is over. I will never understand people playing full price at launch.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Lombert, who asks what game would you rate as 10/10?
For most reviewers 10/10 games are rare but we’ve already had one this year, in Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. But not counting that (because we don’t want everyone giving the same answer) what game would you give top marks to and why?
What does being 10/10 mean to you and how many flaws can a game have before you discount it? Although you can mention more than one game please try to avoid just sending in lists of titles.
